meet ben, centre manager at paddington.
How long have you been with aquatic achievers?
I’ve been with Aquatic Achievers since September 2014. I first started as part of the Reception Team at our Paddington and Aspley centres. I later began to take on more roles within the company, and by the end of 2015 I was teaching at Paddington, was a Progress Advisor at Aspley, was part of the Reception Team at both centres, and had also begun to take on the role of a Senior Receptionist at Aspley. At the beginning of 2016 I came to Aspley fulltime as the centre’s Assistant Manager, now I have been promoted to Centre Manager of the Paddington Centre.
What’s your story?
A swimmer myself, I also come from a swimming family and had a unique childhood that was centred around the aquatic industry. Growing up we divided our time between Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Outback New South Wales. I’ve always had a passion for swimming, and for teaching swimming. When I was 20 I began leasing my own pools in North West Qld, where I taught and facilitated learn to swim and aquatic fitness programs to the local communities. 6 years later went back to university to retrain as a Psychologist. I now have a degree in psychological science and I love that my work with Aquatic Achievers allows me to combine my love for swimming and psychology in such a unique way.
Outside of work my passion is for my family and close friends. I love nothing more than entertaining and cooking for my loved ones (when I’m not ducking off to the beach!) I also have a great love of travel and have travelled extensively through the UK, Europe, parts of the Middle East, and South East Asia. I’d love to go to India next!
I’m a huge believer in personal self-development and try to live holistically. I love to practice mindfulness, meditation, and yoga and am all about fully embracing the present moment and anything that life has to offer. I’m also a self-confessed nerd and usually have 2 or 3 books on the go.
What’s a typical day look like?
I have an awesome job that is all about people. I love that the main focus of my work is to be there for our staff, our customers, and the children we have the privilege of working with. My role is fast-paced and also offers me plenty of diversity. On any given day you can find me supporting our team at Paddington in a variety of ways. A normal day at work can have me working directly with our staff and customers on pool deck, being in the water teaching, working with our Reception Team, and working behind the scenes in an administrative capacity. The thing I love most though is that everything I do is geared towards helping create an amazing experience for our customers and a positive and supportive workplace for our staff.
What made you join?
I was first attracted to Aquatic Achievers because of their positive reputation throughout the swimming industry as a workplace, and also because I’d heard so much about their solo-1 program and was intrigued to see how it worked so well.
What keeps you here?
The company culture. Aquatic Achievers is unlike any company I’ve worked with before. They genuinely care about their customers and their staff. The support system for our staff is amazing. When you come to work you feel valued and like what you do really matters. There’s something very special that’s happening at aquatic achievers.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Weird fact: I don’t get crushes on celebrities, I get crushes on authors. It’s something about the way that they can create a whole world with a few beautifully crafted sentences. Biggest crushes: Deborah Harkness, Kate Morton, Marian Keyes, Oscar Wilde, Patrick Rothfuss.
Favourite ice cream flavour?
I’m not the biggest ice cream fan but give me anything that has chocolate in it and I’m yours!
