meet pete, he’s part of our facility support team.
How long have you been with aquatic achievers?
4 and a half years as full-time. I also worked for 12 months as a contractor before hand.
What’s your story?
I come from a family of 8 kids. My Mother was from Brisbane and my Father from the Bundjalung tribe round Grafton. They were school sweethearts. They were going to get married then called it off because of the taboo of this aboriginal/non aboriginal relationship in that time. In 1968 they ran into each other again. My Mother fell pregnant with me and moved to Gladstone where I was born and raised by Aunty for 6 months to protect me. Mum later picked me up and was raised back with my family. I later found out about my real Father and tried to get in contact. Through this I found out about my other brother and sister (Peta) who I then met after 12 years of looking.
Played football since I was 9 before moving into coaching kids for many years. I gave up football at age 39 but still stay involved with the rugby league circles around corina. Today I live out my footy career through my kids.
I used to be Manufacturing Supervisor for 12.5 years at Century Batteries at Carroll Park before having a mid life crisis and going back to college (SkillsTech at Acacia Ridge) to become a plumber. Then worked as a plumber while doing my apprenticeship before going it alone, which had a slow start. I saw an ad as a handyman with aquatic achievers and got started soon after. The workload become more and more and I came on full time. Then came the construction of the Paddington centre, where I used the plumbing expertise to do all the plumbing and pipework.
What’s a typical day look like?
They are sometimes unpredictable, you never know what will pop up. The role requires tiling, painting, hanging pictures, making lane-ropes, plumbing, fixing filters, as well as other general maintenance. I really enjoy the diversity from day to day.
What made you join?
Job security. Working as a trade had its ups and downs. At first I was Looking for something to fill in the gaps but the job was great and really stable.
What keeps you here?
Really enjoy the wide range of work, and the people you meet and deal with every day. Big spectrum of personalities across the business.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Yep, Halle Berry.
Favourite ice cream flavour?
Jelly tip ice creams, loved em since I was a kid.
